Il Past Continuous in inglese (con esempi ed esercizi)

Il "past continuous" è il tempo verbale inglese che si usa per parlare di azioni che si stavano svolgendo in un momento specifico del passato, ovvero azioni in divenire. In questo articolo vi spieghiamo come e quando usarlo.

Il past continuous è simile al present continuous. La differenza tra questi due tempi verbali è che nel present continuous il verbo è al presente, mentre nel past continuous il verbo è al passato; questo è un buon indizio per identificarlo.

Il past continuous si usa spesso per parlare di un'azione che era in corso quando ne è avvenuta un'altra. Si usa anche per riferirsi a due azioni che sono avvenute nello stesso momento. Ecco alcuni esempi:

I was walking the dog while you were cooking. ➡️ Stavo portando a passeggio il cane mentre tu cucinavi.
We were listening to music; that’s why I didn’t hear the phone. ➡️ Stavamo ascoltando la musica; ecco perché non ho sentito il telefono.
The temperature was getting higher as summer approached. ➡️ La temperatura si stava alzando con l'avvicinarsi dell'estate.
We were going to the cinema when we saw your brother. ➡️ Stavamo andando al cinema quando abbiamo visto tuo fratello.
They were sleeping when we got home. ➡️ Quando siamo tornati a casa stavano dormendo.

REGOLE E STRUTTURA PER LA FORMAZIONE DEL PAST CONTINUOUS + ESEMPI

Vediamo come formare il past continuous. Per formare il past continuous è necessario utilizzare il verbo to be al passato e il verbo principale al gerundio. Ecco un promemoria del verbo to be al passato.

E che cos'era un gerundio? "Camminando", "leggendo" o "dicendo": questi sono esempi di gerundio in italiano. Ricordate che il gerundio dei verbi inglesi si forma aggiungendo la desinenza -ing al verbo all'infinito senza to.

Nella seguente tabella si può vedere come si forma il past continuous nella forma affermativa, negativa e interrogativa.

	I was having lunch with my mother. ➡️ Stavo mangiando con mia madre.
	You were studying a lot back then. ➡️ All'epoca stavi studiando molto.
	She was looking at me. ➡️ Mi stava guardando.
	They were living in Cologne. ➡️ Stavano vivendo a Colonia.
	We were working from home that week. ➡️ Quella settimana stavamo lavorando da casa.
Negativa	Soggetto + verbo to be al passato + not + gerundio (verbo che termina in -ing)
	I was not (wasn’t) watching TV. ➡️ Non stavo guardando la TV.
	My sister was not (wasn’t) feeling very well. ➡️ Mia sorella non si stava sentendo molto bene.
	You were not listening. ➡️ Non stavi ascoltando.
	We were not talking loudly. ➡️ Non stavamo parlando ad alta voce.
	Laura was not working when I called her. ➡️ Laura non stava lavorando quando la chiamai.
Interrogativa	Verbo to be al passato + soggetto + gerundio (verbo che termina in -ing)
	Was I being annoying to you? ➡️ Ti stava dando fastidio?
	Were you living in Greece last year? ➡️ Stavate vivendo in Grecia l'anno scorso?
	Were they talking to us? ➡️ Stavano parlando con noi?
	Was Mike studying this morning? ➡️ Mike stava studiando questa mattina?
	Was the cat sleeping? ➡️ Il gatto stava dormendo?

Per rispondere alle domande in past continuous che prevedono risposte brevi, dobbiamo usare il verbo to be.

Were you reading? – Yes, I was / No, I wasn’t ➡️ Stai leggendo? - Sì / No.
Was Peter waiting for me? – Yes, he was / No, he wasn’t. ➡️ Peter mi stava aspettando? - Sì / No.
Were they living in Prague ten years ago? – Yes, they were / No, they weren’t. ➡️ Dieci anni fa stavano vivendo a Praga? - Sì / No.
Was it raining when you left home? – Yes, it was / No, it wasn’t. ➡️ Stava piovendo quando siete usciti di casa? - Sì / No.
Was the washing machine working when it broke down? – Yes, it was / No, it wasn’t. ➡️ Stava funzionando la lavatrice quando si è rotta? - Sì / No.

Past simple vs past continuous

La differenza tra past simple e il past continuous è che il past simple si usa per parlare di azioni passate che sono già terminate, mentre il past continuous si usa per parlare di azioni che erano in corso in un certo momento del passato.
