Esempi di frasi con il past perfect simple e past perfect continuous

Il past perfect simple e il past perfect continuous sono due tempi verbali usati per parlare di azioni avvenute nel passato. Sono simili, ma non uguali, quindi è utile imparare a distinguerli per usarli correttamente.

COSA SONO IL past perfect simple E IL past perfect continuous

Il past perfect simple e il past perfect continuous sono due tempi verbali utilizzati per parlare di un'azione che è avvenuta prima di un'altra azione nel passato. L'equivalente in italiano sarebbe il trapassato prossimo ("avevo letto").

• When I arrived home, John had made dinner (past perfect simple) ➡️ Quando sono arrivato a casa, John aveva preparato la cena.
• We were tired because we had been playing basketball (past perfect continuous) ➡️ Eravamo stanchi perché avevamo giocato a pallacanestro.

Questi due tempi verbali sono piuttosto simili tra loro, quindi a volte può risultare complicato distinguerli. Per farlo, devi osservare se l'azione a cui il verbo si riferisce si è conclusa o in è corso. Il past perfect simple mette in evidenza il completamento dell'azione, mentre il past perfect continuous il progresso o la durata dell'azione. Il present perfect continuous suggerisce anche che l'azione è temporanea e non permanente.
